Afreximbank to provide 10 billion US dollars for Gulf crisis response
Afreximbank has approved a 10 billion US dollar Gulf Crisis Response Programme (GCRP). This fund will help African and Caribbean economies, banks, and businesses. It aims to reduce the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Middle East conflict began on February 28, 2026. It has caused global economic problems, especially for African and Caribbean countries. These countries rely on imports of fuel, fertiliser, and food. The conflict also affects shipping routes and money sent home by citizens. The GCRP will give short-term foreign exchange and cash. This helps countries buy essential items like fuel, food, and medicine. It also helps African energy and mineral exporters gain from higher prices. The program supports their production and trade. It also offers aid to tourism and aviation sectors hurt by the crisis. Over time, the program will build stronger economies. It will help energy and mineral producers. It will also finish important energy, port, and logistics projects delayed by the conflict. Dr. George Elombi, Afreximbank President, said the program helps countries adjust to the crisis. It builds resilience against future shocks by changing how economies work. Afreximbank has run similar programs before. These include responses to the 2015/16 commodity shock, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Ukraine crisis. The bank used 39 billion US dollars during the Ukraine crisis to help African countries. These past actions show Afreximbank's ability to help its members through global problems. The bank is also working with other groups. These include the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union Commission. Their goal is to improve regional efforts on energy safety and trade.
