Energy Sector Needs Skilled Workers
Africa's energy sector development is hindered by a lack of skilled workers, not money or technology. Projects like refineries and gas plants cannot run well without trained staff. Many African refineries use only 40% of their capacity, compared to over 70% globally, partly due to skill shortages. This increases risk for investors and makes Africa rely on foreign products. Africa wants to build more oil refineries, gas plants, and pipelines. This is to make its own fuels and goods, and to stop buying so much from other countries. But Africa does not have enough skilled people to run these new facilities.
This lack of trained workers is the biggest problem for Africa's energy safety. It is a bigger problem than not enough money or technology. Energy projects need workers with special skills for many years. Without a plan to train new workers, these projects may not do well.
Many refineries in Africa only use about 40% of their capacity. This is much lower than the 70% used by refineries in other parts of the world. Skill shortages are a main reason for this low use. When there are not enough skilled workers, plants run less well and have more risks. This makes investors worry about putting money into long-term projects.
The COVID-19 pandemic showed this problem clearly. When foreign experts could not travel, many African projects stopped or slowed down. Projects with local skilled workers did much better and kept running. Africa still relies too much on foreign workers. It needs to train its own people to be strong and independent.
Africa has many young people. Almost 60% of people are under 25. This is a big chance for growth. But companies find it hard to get skilled workers. Schools do not always teach the skills needed by industries. Also, skilled workers sometimes leave Africa for better jobs. Africa needs to link schools, businesses, and government to train its young people better. This will help Africa make its own energy and grow its economy.
