The Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professionals (GFAHP), Korle Bu Teaching Hospital chapter, has voiced strong objection to management’s decision. Management withdrew the appointment of the Head of Laboratory Services. It also reassigned oversight of the Central Laboratory. The federation stated this in a release on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.

Management indicated the decision followed a directive from the hospital’s governing board. The Director of Medical Affairs is now expected to oversee the Laboratory Sub-BMC. This refers to the laboratory department within the hospital’s management structure. The GFAHP noted this change undermines a previous stakeholder agreement. That agreement was made on February 3, 2026.

A Ministry of Health-led meeting had agreed on appointing a Medical Laboratory Scientist as the head. This was to ensure accountability and continuity in laboratory services. The GFAHP considers the current action a reversal of that consensus. They argue it jeopardizes industrial harmony. This is particularly concerning given the context of ongoing efforts to improve public healthcare infrastructure and management in Ghana. Such decisions can affect staff morale and efficiency, directly impacting patient care quality.

The Federation argued the revocation goes against established professional frameworks. It also threatens the autonomy of Allied Health practice. This development has caused concern among Allied Health professionals at Korle Bu. It risks damaging confidence in current stakeholder discussions. The GFAHP urges management to immediately review and overturn this decision. They insist on upholding the February 3, 2026 agreement.

Swift action is needed to maintain industrial peace. Trust between management and Allied Health professionals must be preserved. The GFAHP reaffirms its commitment to professional engagement. However, it warned of future actions guided by lawful collective decisions if the issue remains unresolved. The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has already announced a nationwide strike. This strike is set to begin on May 12, 2026, over the same issue, highlighting the widespread discontent.
