Ghana Urged to Boost Local Chicken Consumption
Ghanaians are being urged to buy more local chicken. This supports the Nkoko Nketenkete Programme. It aims to grow the poultry industry and create jobs. The program has already helped 60,000 households.
Ghanaians should choose locally raised chicken more often. This is the call from Bright Demordzi, National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme. He believes this will strengthen Ghana’s own poultry farms.
Choosing Ghanaian chicken helps create jobs. It also improves the lives of many families. This helps the whole country’s economy grow. Imported chicken can be stored longer. Local chicken is often fresher. This makes it healthier for consumers.
The “Nkoko Nketenkete” programme started to revive Ghana’s chicken business. It aims to make Ghana less dependent on foreign chicken. This programme helps create jobs. It also boosts incomes for families. Many people in villages will benefit. The success relies on Ghanaians buying local products.
Mr. Demordzi warned about some imported poultry. It might not be safe to eat. This is due to long storage times. He urged people to support local farmers. Buying fresh Ghanaian chicken is key. Ghana spends millions of dollars each year on imported chicken. This spending is not sustainable for the economy.
The Nkoko Nketenkete initiative has already made a difference. About 60,000 households across Ghana received help. This included around 3 million chickens. They also received food for the birds. Training was provided to farmers. This training helps them raise more chickens.
The programme helps the entire chicken process. This includes raising the birds, preparing them, and selling them. It also aims to draw more money into the poultry business. Traditional leaders are also asked to support this effort. Their backing can help ensure the programme succeeds.
Ernest Mensah, who received help from the programme, thanked the government. He lives near Kumasi. He encouraged other farmers to use this chance. They can improve their earnings and lives. Some people in the industry also mentioned needs. Better ways to sell chicken are required. More cold storage spaces are important. Chicken prices must also be competitive.
These improvements will make local chicken more appealing. A united national effort is necessary. Increased buying of local chicken means less money spent on imports. This strengthens Ghana’s economy. It also makes sure there is enough food for everyone.
