Businesses face inflated customs charges from AI system

Ghanaian businesses face new challenges at the ports. An AI-driven system for customs assessment is causing inflated charges. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin met with the Ghana Employers’ Association. Businesses shared concerns about the system.

The AI system generates customs assessments. These assessments are much higher than the actual value of goods. Some businesses report charges multiple times their previous rates for the same items. This is happening to compliant importers, not those trying to evade duties. Afenyo-Markin said the system is not detecting fraud. Instead, it creates higher costs for legal businesses.

The Minority Caucus supports using AI in government. They believe it can improve customs and reduce corruption. But they insist on proper safeguards. The current system, named Publican Trade Solution, lacks these safeguards. There was no consultation with businesses before its rollout. The system also operates without a clear appeal process or parliamentary review.

The Minority Leader warned that an AI system on an old duty structure makes problems worse. It creates unfair results more quickly. The Caucus will push for parliamentary review. They also demand solutions for affected businesses.
