Chelsea Football Club posts record 262 million GBP loss

Chelsea Football Club recorded the largest pre-tax loss in Premier League history for the 2024-25 financial year. The deficit totaled 262 million British Pounds. This exceeds Manchester City's 197.5 million British Pounds loss in 2011.

The loss happened despite Chelsea earning 490.9 million British Pounds in revenue. This is the second-highest revenue total in the club's history.

The club states it is still following financial rules like Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). These rules allow clubs to lose 105 million British Pounds over three years. The numbers used for these rules are different from the pre-tax loss figures.

Since BlueCo took over in 2022, Chelsea has spent more than 1 billion British Pounds on new players. UEFA fined the club 26.7 million British Pounds for breaking squad-cost rules. UEFA is watching the club for three years.

Sources say the reported losses include a 10.75 million British Pounds Premier League fine for agent payments under the old owner. They also include financial write-offs for players like Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Chelsea expects income to increase in future reports. This is due to 85 million British Pounds from winning the Club World Cup. Another 80 million British Pounds is expected from Champions League television rights.

The club's women's team lost 17.1 million British Pounds in 2024-25, with revenues of 21.3 million British Pounds.

Experts note that good performance in the Champions League is vital for club finances. Clubs receive significantly more money from Champions League broadcasting rights compared to the Conference League.

The club's stadium capacity is another concern. Stamford Bridge is smaller than rivals' stadiums. New Premier League rules will allow clubs to spend 85% of total revenue on squad costs. This makes boosting revenue very important.

Last year, Chelsea made a 128.4 million British Pounds profit. This was mainly from selling the women's team to themselves. This accounting loophole has since been closed. Total pre-tax losses over the last three years are about 220 million British Pounds.
