ECG to upgrade 12 Accra substation transformers

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will start a major transformer upgrade program in parts of Accra. This aims to make power supply more reliable and stable.

The project will upgrade 12 power transformers. These are at six main substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi. The transformers will change from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA. This change will greatly increase the power load capacity. It will also help fix system overloads in areas that are growing fast.

ECG says the first part of this work will begin on April 8, 2026. It should finish by April 10, 2026. To do the work safely, planned power outages will happen in the affected areas. These outages will be for six hours at a time, rotating across different groups of communities. Areas like East Legon Hills, Lakeside, Borteyman, Sakumono, and Spintex will be affected.

This upgrade is key to making the electricity system stronger. It will help ensure a more steady and efficient power supply across the country.
