Senior leaders from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) met in Accra to strengthen their approach to transforming Africa’s food systems. The 15th FAO Regional Management Team (RMT15) Meeting focused on innovation and efficiency.

The three-day gathering brought together top FAO officials from Africa, including headquarters representatives and regional coordinators. They discussed how the FAO can improve its performance and deliver better results across the continent. The theme was “Driving Efficiency for Delivery and Impact: Innovate. Accelerate. Scale.”

Africa is crucial for the FAO’s future success and global standing. FAO Deputy Director-General Godfrey Magwenzi stated that Africa is where many challenges converge. He added that the FAO must show it can deliver with ambition and innovation in Africa. Demonstrating effective and scalable delivery in Africa strengthens the entire organization. FAO Deputy Director-General Maurizio Martina emphasized that the FAO must act as one integrated system. This avoids duplication and speeds up decision-making. Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol stressed that results matter more than securing funds. She said the FAO needs to deliver faster and with better coordination.

Ghana hosted the important meeting. The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Dumelo, welcomed the participants. He highlighted agriculture’s central role in Ghana’s development plans. Minister Dumelo urged participants to renew their commitment to delivery. He said their work should bring real change to farmers and communities. The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Emilia Arthur, praised the FAO partnership. She encouraged participants to “innovate boldly, accelerate delivery and scale what works.” African Union Commissioner Moses Vilakati emphasized partnership for progress. He called for prioritizing inclusive and climate-smart agriculture.

FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Africa, Abebe Haile-Gabriel, challenged attendees. He urged a focus on concrete actions at all organizational levels. He outlined five priority areas. These include sharper prioritization of activities. They also involve stronger oversight of projects. This allows earlier identification of problems and risks. Managers need to escalate bottlenecks faster. Accountability for problems is essential. Learning from country-level successes is also key. Adapting these successes across the region will improve performance. Finally, he stressed stronger follow-through on decisions. This ensures actions are taken and progress is tracked rigorously.

This meeting occurs at a vital time. The FAO is working to implement its Strategic Framework 2022–2030. This framework guides the organization’s global efforts. Accelerating agricultural transformation in Africa holds significant economic implications.
