Ghana Airports Company confirms new airport levy funding infrastructure projects

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has confirmed a new Airport Infrastructure Development Levy. This levy is for funding critical airport projects. These projects include runway overlays, a northern apron, multi-storey car park, and sewage treatment systems at Kotoka International Airport. Regional airports will also get upgrades.

GACL expects these works to finish within 24 months. The levy applies to international, regional, and domestic travelers. GACL believes it will fund all planned work without excessive burden on travelers.

The company said that without this levy, existing infrastructure, like the runway, risks damage. This could lead to downgraded airport services. The Finance Ministry will review the levy after projects are complete.

The new levy has caused debate about rising airline ticket prices. Airlines are already adjusting their fares for both local and international flights.
