GenCED Condemns Minister's Sexualised Remarks Against Akosua Manu
The Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED) has strongly condemned Ghana's Ashanti Regional Minister for making alleged sexually suggestive remarks about Madam Akosua Manu. GenCED stated these comments weaken democratic governance and discourage women from entering politics. The organization called for a public apology, stronger ethical enforcement, and an end to sexist rhetoric in political discourse.
The Gender Centre for Empowering Development (GenCED) has condemned the Ashanti Regional Minister for alleged sexually suggestive and degrading remarks against Madam Akosua Manu.
GenCED issued a statement on June 3, warning that such conduct undermines women’s participation in politics. It also stated that this behaviour weakens democratic governance in Ghana. The organization expressed deep concern over comments circulating on social media and other platforms.
This incident fits into a broader pattern of challenges faced by women in Ghanaian politics. Discrimination, intimidation, and online abuse are significant barriers. Such public comments by high-ranking officials reinforce a hostile environment. This discourages women and young women from seeking leadership positions, impacting Ghana's democratic health. Over the past decade, female representation in Ghana’s Parliament has remained low, fluctuating below 15%. This highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality in political spaces.
GenCED described the comments as “offensive, unacceptable, and wholly inconsistent with the standards expected in a democratic society.” It stressed that while political disagreements are legitimate, “sexual harassment, misogyny, personal degradation, and gender-based humiliation are not.” The organisation further argued that the reported remarks appeared inconsistent with the Code of Conduct and Ethics for Ministers and Political Appointees. This code requires public officials to use decorous language and avoid offensive conduct.
The incident raises legitimate concerns about adherence to ethical standards expected of public office holders. Moving forward, stakeholders will watch for the Minister's response and any actions taken by political parties or state institutions. This event could prompt a renewed push for stricter enforcement of ethical guidelines within political circles. Ensuring a respectful political dialogue is crucial for safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values and encouraging broader participation. Political decisions and public opinion concerning women in leadership will likely be influenced by this outcome for the next several months. There could be a wider debate on Ghana's commitment to inclusive governance and gender equality.
