Ghana's Cabinet has approved a GHS3.4 billion investment to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) computer center. This decision aims to boost Ghana's technology innovation and position the country as a leading hub for AI development in Africa.
The new center will support AI research, development, and use across important sectors. These include agriculture, healthcare, and education. The initiative is part of a wider plan to advance Ghana's digital economy. Ghana has a strong foundation for digital growth, with over 38 million mobile subscriptions nationwide.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, announced this plan. He spoke at a National Stakeholder Engagement on Ghana's AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) Report. The government will also launch Ghana's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy on April 24, 2026. This strategy will help adopt AI across all parts of the economy, including financial services.
The UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment Methodology helps Ghana evaluate its preparedness. It looks at governance, infrastructure, data systems, research, economic readiness, and ethical safeguards. Findings from this assessment will guide policy decisions. The government will focus on strengthening data systems, investing in AI research, expanding AI education, and ensuring ethical use.
This investment is expected to have a significant national economic effect. It signals Ghana's commitment to structural reform in the technology sector. It could attract more foreign direct investment and create new jobs in the digital economy. The focus on AI in key sectors like agriculture and healthcare could improve efficiency and service delivery.
