Ghana Airports Authority raises domestic passenger charge by 1800%
Ghana's government has sharply increased the Domestic Airport Passenger Service Charge. This rise from GHS5.00 to GHS100.00 for one-way tickets marks an 1800% increase. The change also applies to return flights, where the charge is now GHS200.00. Critics argue this large hike could hurt domestic air travel and local airlines.
The Ghana government has decided to increase the Domestic Airport Passenger Service Charge (APSC). The charge for a one-way ticket is now GHS100.00, up from GHS5.00. For return flights, the charge is GHS200.00.
This increase means the APSC has risen by 1800%. An MP, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said this jump is too much. He believes it will negatively affect domestic air travel. He also fears it will harm local airlines.
Nyarko agreed that the old charge of GHS5.00 was low. It needed to be reviewed. However, he stated that an 1800% increase is excessive. He pointed out the financial pressure already on airline passengers. Airline fares have already gone up since January 2026. This new charge adds more burden.
The MP suggested a slower, yearly increase. This way, passengers could adjust more easily. He said a sudden jump could push local airlines into trouble.
The rapid rise in this charge comes when domestic flight costs are already a concern. The new APSC is seen as another financial strain on people who fly within Ghana.
