GhIE inducts 194 engineers, calls for better infrastructure standards

The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has added 194 new professional engineers. This induction boosts Ghana's technical capacity. It increases the pool of qualified individuals for infrastructure projects.

The GhIE President, Ludwig Annang Hesse, highlighted the importance of high standards. He spoke about a recent building collapse in Accra New Town. He described it as avoidable. This incident shows problems with following building rules and professional standards.

Mr. Hesse called for government to audit existing buildings. This includes abandoned structures and old infrastructure. These pose risks to public safety. He asked for accountability in design, permitting, construction, and supervision. The new engineers were urged to work with integrity and improve infrastructure quality.

Out of the 194 inductees, 188 passed standard exams. Four were admitted for their experience. The new engineers include 77 Civil Engineers, 43 Mechanical, Agricultural, and Marine Engineers, 26 Chemical and Mining Engineers, and 46 Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

The induction helps strengthen Ghana's engineering workforce. It aims to improve infrastructure development and service delivery across the country. Poor infrastructure quality can lead to economic costs and safety issues. Strengthening engineering standards can reduce these risks and support stable economic growth.
