GNAT Demands Probe Over Alleged Soldier Assault on Teachers
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for an official investigation into allegations that military personnel assaulted three teachers and a civilian in Adiewoso, Western Region. The incident reportedly occurred after a confrontation related to illegal mining operations.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is demanding a full investigation into an alleged assault. Military personnel reportedly attacked three teachers. A civilian was also affected. The incident occurred in Adiewoso, Western Region. GNAT described the actions as "barbaric and inhumane." This happened on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
This alleged attack followed earlier tensions. These tensions were linked to illegal mining activities. This illegal mining is commonly known as galamsey. It was taking place on land belonging to Ghana Rubber Estate Limited. Soldiers, believed to be from the 2nd Infantry Battalion, initially confronted residents on April 28. They were clamping down on illegal mining operations. The situation escalated two days later. Military personnel allegedly returned and carried out indiscriminate assaults. GNAT stated victims were forced to lie on the ground. They were whipped repeatedly on their backs. They also received threats of being shot if they resisted. The victims identified themselves as teachers. They showed their GNAT ID cards. Their pleas were allegedly ignored.
Ghana's economy faces ongoing challenges with illegal mining. The government has deployed military personnel to combat these activities. This operation is part of a broader strategy to protect natural resources. However, such enforcement actions must adhere to human rights standards. Previous incidents have raised concerns about the conduct of security forces. GNAT's demand highlights the need for accountability. Education unions often advocate for the safety of teachers. This includes protection from violence and harassment.
In a statement, the Wassa West District branch of GNAT condemned the incident. They are calling on key government bodies. These include the Ministries of Interior and Defence. The Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Service are also involved. The Western Regional Coordinating Council must also act. GNAT seeks assurance that those responsible will be held accountable. The Ghana Education Service is asked to grant affected teachers leave. This leave would allow for recovery and counselling. This support is crucial for their well-being.
The union warned of further action. This will happen if authorities do not respond. GNAT expects a response within two weeks. GNAT also thanked the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem. His intervention and support are appreciated. The affected teachers have reported the case to the police. They have also sought medical treatment. Their medical reports will support the ongoing investigations. The government's commitment to fighting galamsey is acknowledged. However, GNAT stresses human rights must be respected.
