Government secures GHS1.26 billion for new universities

The Ghanaian government has secured a GHS1.26 billion financing agreement. This deal, worth $92 million, is with a Korean contractor. It will fund the full completion of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences (UEAS).

This new university will have its main campus in Bunso, Eastern Region. Other campuses are planned for Kenyasi, Ashanti Region, and Acherensua, Ahafo Region.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, confirmed the funding on April 3, 2026. He said this agreement will ensure the facility is completed. The university will train students in modern engineering and agricultural skills.

Agriculture is a major part of Ghana's economy. It contributes between 20% and 26% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It also employs almost half of the workforce. However, farming methods are often old.

Officials believe the new university will help fix these problems. It will promote new technologies. It will also support research to improve farming, including using artificial intelligence. This aims to increase crop yields and lower costs.

The project started in 2023 but stopped due to payment issues. The newly secured funding is expected to restart and complete the construction.

Once open, the UEAS will provide practical skills. It will also drive new ideas in the agricultural sector. This is expected to support Ghana's development goals.
