Kenya fuel executives resign amid irregular contracts
Senior executives in Kenya's energy sector have resigned. This follows accusations of wrong actions. These actions include changing fuel stock data. They also include buying emergency fuel at inflated prices. President William Ruto's office confirmed this on Saturday. Mohamed Liban, the principal secretary for petroleum, has resigned. Joe Sang, the managing director of Kenya Pipeline Company, also stepped down. The director general of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, has also resigned. An official investigation has now started. It looks into problems in Kenya's petroleum supply chain. The government stated that wrong data was used. This data was to make emergency fuel imports seem needed. This was despite existing contracts with companies like Saudi Aramco and ADNOC Global Trading. These companies were already meeting their supply agreements. The emergency fuel was allegedly too expensive. It was also said to be of poor quality. It was bought at prices much higher than agreed in other deals. This seems to have been done to benefit from rising global prices. It also used public worry to create a false idea of a fuel shortage. This investigation happens during worries about fuel supply. These worries are linked to the Iran conflict, which affects world energy markets. The government has taken action against more officials. Arrests have also been made. No one has been charged yet.
