Parts of Kumasi experienced scheduled power outages on May 6 and 7 as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) installed new, more powerful transformers. These planned interruptions occurred between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both days.

The power cuts were necessary for engineers to safely remove old equipment and install the upgraded transformers. This major upgrade involved temporarily shutting down sections of the 33kV power network and carefully managing power on some 11kV lines. ECG is replacing two older transformers with stronger ones capable of handling increased electricity demand, aiming to reduce system pressure and enhance overall performance.

This initiative responds to Kumasi's rapid growth and the corresponding increased electricity consumption. The city has recently experienced power fluctuations and outages, not due to insufficient generation capacity, but because the existing infrastructure struggled with higher demand. These planned upgrades are crucial for sustaining development and economic activity in one of Ghana's most significant urban centers. They align with broader national efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure reliable utility services across the country.

An official from the ECG stated that the new transformers will help stabilize the electricity system. They will also make the power supply more reliable for residents and businesses. Teams from both Accra and Kumasi are collaborating on this project. ECG expects full power restoration shortly after the two-day exercise.

The upgrades aim to prevent future power fluctuations caused by demand surges. The successful completion of this project should provide a more stable and reliable power supply for Kumasi's growing population. Businesses and households will benefit from consistent electricity, reducing disruptions and supporting local economic activity. Decision-makers will monitor the impact of these infrastructure improvements on the city's power stability and broader economic productivity.
