Kumasi Technical University develops self-charging EV prototype

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has unveiled a prototype electric vehicle (EV) that recharges its battery automatically when the car slows down or brakes. This innovation by students aims to address high fuel costs and the need for new charging infrastructure for EVs in Ghana. The university is now seeking partners to move from prototypes to commercial production of such vehicles.

Kumasi Technical University develops self-charging EV prototype

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has developed an electric vehicle (EV) prototype that recharges its own battery while driving. This five-seater car, named 'Nimde3 Hyiren REV', was created by three final-year Bachelor of Technology students.

This EV uses a system that takes energy normally lost when the car slows down or brakes and puts it back into the battery. This means the car does not need to be plugged in as often. Professor Prince Owusu-Ansah, Head of the Automotive and Agricultural Mechanisation Department, stated this design aims to help drivers avoid running out of battery charge. He noted it could travel from Kumasi to Konongo and back without needing to be charged externally.

The vehicle was built entirely in Ghana. This adapts the technology to local road conditions. The university showcased this EV as part of its strategy to connect academia with industry. Vice-Chancellor Professor Gabriel Dwomoh called on government and private sector partners to help advance Ghana's industrialisation through similar innovations.

KsTU plans to move from building prototypes to mass production for interested buyers. Professor Owusu-Ansah confirmed that the engineering faculty is ready to take orders. A custom-built vehicle would be ready six months after payment.

This initiative could help Ghana deal with increasing fuel prices. It also supports the global shift towards cleaner transportation. The project highlights the potential for local engineering to solve energy challenges.
