Lands and Mines Watch Ghana Demands Better Worker Safeguards
Lands and Mines Watch Ghana has called for improved worker safety and fair wages in Ghana's extractive sectors. The organization stated that the nation's natural wealth has not sufficiently benefited its workers, especially those in mining regions affected by illegal activities. The group urges stricter safety regulations and greater transparency.
Lands and Mines Watch Ghana has demanded stronger protection for workers in Ghana’s resource extraction industries. The group warned on May 1st that the country’s rich natural resources must translate into safer workplaces and better pay. Executive Director Kwame Owusu Danso stated that Ghana cannot achieve real development while its workers face poor conditions. This demand was made during events marking International Workers’ Day, celebrated globally to honour labourers and their concerns.
Ghana observes May Day with a focus on issues in sectors like mining, construction, and agriculture. Lands and Mines Watch Ghana paid tribute to workers in these fields, especially those in dangerous roles. They noted these workers are vital to the economy and national progress. However, the group stressed that profits from mining have not significantly improved the lives of many workers. This is particularly true in areas impacted by illegal mining, known as galamsey.
The organization is pushing for stricter rules on workplace health and safety. They also want more openness in how mineral resources are managed. Policies that favour local people in the resource industry are also a priority. The group highlighted the environmental damage caused by illegal mining as a serious problem. They urged the government and other groups to work harder to stop this degradation. Lands and Mines Watch Ghana acknowledged the efforts of security forces, journalists, and volunteers working to protect natural resources despite risks.
Mr. Danso emphasized that national advancement needs more than just talk. He pointed to labour, discipline, creativity, and national pride as key to progress. The group is committed to promoting responsible management of resources. They also aim to protect the rights of workers. The future of Ghana, they believe, depends on how well it protects both its natural wealth and its people.
