President John Mahama has directed the Inspector-General of Police to expand recruitment into the Police College. This decision will allow an additional 300 candidates to be admitted. These individuals had scored between 50 and 53 per cent in recent examinations. This is slightly below the 53 per cent cut-off mark. The President made the announcement on May 2, 2026. He was speaking at the commissioning of a Divisional Police Headquarters. The event took place in Laasi, Krobo-Odumase. Mahama praised the Ghana Police Service for its performance. He specifically commended Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu. The President highlighted the shift towards intelligence-led policing. He described this approach as timely and necessary. "In an era where crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated, our response must be equally dynamic and forward-looking," he stated. He also emphasised the critical role of the Police Intelligence Team. Their work is essential for the Service’s success. He urged continued investment. This investment should focus on technology and data systems. Capacity building for officers is also important. "We must invest in technology, strengthen data systems and empower our officers with the skills and tools required to stay ahead of criminal elements," Mahama said. He stressed that police officers are the core strength of the Service. He encouraged them to protect public trust through professionalism and discipline. Recognition and reward for exceptional service were also praised. This practice serves as a good incentive for officers. Policing involves serving humanity, not just enforcing laws. Fairness and integrity are key values. The new police headquarters in Krobo-Odumase represents an investment in infrastructure. The President reminded the audience that security is a shared responsibility. Community cooperation is vital for the effectiveness of the new facility. He assured continued government support. This support will cover logistics, infrastructure, and human resource development.
