NAFCO Needs GH¢770 Million to Purchase Excess Farmer Produce

The National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) urgently needs GH¢770 million. This money is required to buy rice and other grains from farmers across Ghana. Farmers are facing challenges with selling their crops. They also report delays in payments from the government for food supplied to schools.

This funding deficit comes as farmers struggle with market access. NAFCO was directed to buy local rice for the Free SHS programme. However, farmers complain that NAFCO has not bought enough. Some schools are reportedly still using imported rice. This situation impacts the livelihoods of many Ghanaian farmers.

This situation is part of a larger economic picture in Ghana. The government aims to support domestic agriculture. It wants to reduce reliance on imported food. The Free SHS programme is a key initiative. It uses a large amount of food. Ensuring a steady supply of local food is vital for this programme. It also helps Ghanaian farmers earn a stable income. Data shows a growing demand for food in the country. Supporting local production is a constant policy goal.

Emmanuel Arthur, NAFCO's spokesperson, explained the situation. He stated that the company required GH¢770 million to buy the surplus produce. "We had told the government that we needed not less than GH¢770 million to be able to mop up what was with the farmers," he clarified. He noted that the government initially approved GH¢100 million in 2025. An additional GH¢200 million has been indicated in the 2026 budget. "We’re waiting for it," he added, emphasizing the pending funds.

The implications of this funding shortfall are significant. Farmers may face financial hardship. They could struggle to prepare for the next planting season. Delays in NAFCO payments can disrupt their operations. This could affect overall food production in Ghana. The government needs to address this funding gap to ensure food security. It also needs to fulfill its promise to support local farmers.
