A new African-led science-policy platform has officially launched to improve food systems, diets, and health across the continent. The Africa Regional Collaborative for Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH-ARC) will connect leading research and policy institutions to make better decisions about food. This initiative began its work in Accra, Ghana, on April 30, 2026.

The ANH-ARC brings together experts from Ghana, Ethiopia, and South Africa. It aims to use strong scientific evidence to guide policies and investments. This is crucial because many African food systems face many problems. These include not enough nutritious food, rising food costs, fast-growing cities, and climate change impacts. The platform will help turn research findings into actions that can fix these issues.

This launch is important for Ghana's economic landscape. It highlights a growing trend of African-led solutions to continental challenges. Issues of food security and nutrition directly impact public health, which in turn affects labour productivity and national development. Previous efforts have often been fragmented. A coordinated approach integrating agriculture, nutrition, and health is key to fostering sustainable economic growth. This collaborative nature mirrors the need for integrated policy approaches seen in other sectors like trade and infrastructure.

Professor Amos Laar from the University of Ghana explained the need for this unified approach. He stated that decisions about food are often split between different government departments. The ANH-ARC seeks to bridge this gap by using evidence and understanding local African realities. Dr. Alebel Weldesilassie of Ethiopia’s Policy Studies Institute stressed the need for money to support these changes. He noted that effective transformation requires good evidence and planned funding across different areas. Strengthening governance systems and accountability measures are key, according to Professor Kennedy Dzama of South Africa’s Stellenbosch University.

The ANH-ARC is part of a global network. This global network is funded by the UK government and the Gates Foundation. Professor Sir John Edmunds, UK Chief Scientific Adviser, expressed pride in the UK's investment. He believes this will boost research capabilities and connect scientists with policymakers. The Gates Foundation also sees this as a critical moment. Ana Maria Loboguerrero from the Gates Foundation highlighted the goal of improving access to safe, affordable food. She mentioned leveraging evidence rooted in local experiences to inform climate-smart policies. The initiative's focus on gender equity and climate resilience is designed to ensure that changes benefit everyone and can withstand future environmental challenges.

The implications of this platform's work are significant for public health and economic stability in Africa. Policymakers will now have better access to the evidence needed to create effective policies. This could lead to more resilient food systems and improved nutrition for millions. Investors looking to support sustainable agriculture and health initiatives in Africa will also pay close attention to the ANH-ARC's progress and project outcomes. Future policy directions in agriculture and public health funding will likely be influenced by its findings.
