Government will not compensate structure owners on 24-Hour Economy market lands

The Ghanaian government has confirmed it will not pay compensation for private structures on market lands in the Savannah Region. These lands are needed for market development under the 24-Hour Economy initiative. The Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribe, announced this during a contract signing for projects across seven district assemblies.

Mr. Be-Awuribe stated that private developers were previously warned not to build on these market lands. He stressed that these are existing market areas with clear ownership by the state. Therefore, no compensation packages are available for structures built without permission.

The Minister also noted that district assemblies must provide clear, unencumbered land for contractors to start work. In cases where land acquisition causes compensation issues, the government would consider moving projects to alternative sites. This ensures projects proceed without financial burdens related to land disputes.

Alternative land will be offered to affected individuals. This will follow negotiations with traditional authorities. This approach aims to resolve issues amicably without direct monetary compensation for the structures.

The signed projects cover areas including Salaga, Faboya, Damongo, Buipe, Bole, Kpalbe, Sawla, and Daboya. The Mankarigu project requires a second bidding round. Contractors have been warned against reducing quality or changing designs. The government plans timely payments to help finish projects on schedule.
