NPA to regulate 24-hour petroleum operations

The 24-Hour Economy Authority and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to expand 24-hour operations in Ghana's downstream petroleum sector.

The agreement was signed in Accra on March 31. It is part of Ghana's plan for economic transformation. Reliable, round-the-clock fuel supply is key for this plan.

Under the MoU, the NPA will create and enforce rules for 24-hour service. These rules will cover fuel stations, refineries, and storage depots. They will also apply to road vehicle operations. The standards will cover lighting, security, staff rules, digital fuel tracking, and fire safety.

The 24-Hour Economy Authority will help set up the right conditions. This includes placing security forces and getting government support for approved operators.

This partnership links the petroleum sector to the wider 24-Hour Economy program. This program wants to grow food processing, boost factories, and improve transport links across Ghana. A steady fuel supply helps these areas stay productive.

The plan will start with a pilot program. It will cover about 10% of the downstream sector across the country. Placing security is an immediate task. The NPA has already formed a committee to prepare for this change. They will work with industry players, security agencies, and other regulators.
