The OMJ Foundation has launched a four-month intensive programme to boost Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results in Akuapem South. The initiative, addressing a 48 percent pass rate, provides extra classes, learning materials, and scholarships for students from five basic schools. Fifty-eight schools in the municipality are planned for future expansion.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination Preparation Intervention Project (BECEPIP) began in January 2026. It specifically targets five schools in the Akuapem South Municipality. These schools include Konkonuru Methodist Basic, Kitasi M/A Basic, Anamerampa Basic, Pakro Anglican Basic, and Nsakye M/A Basic. The project aims to improve academic performance leading up to the 2026 BECE examinations.
This intervention addresses a significant dip in previous results. Last year, only 48 percent of students passed the BECE in the municipality. This figure is lower than both municipal and national averages. The foundation plans a wider rollout. Its long-term goal is to reach all 57 basic schools in Akuapem South by the end of 2035.
Students in the participating schools received intensive support. This included fully funded extra classes held three times daily for four months. The project also covered the cost of printing learning materials and mock exam papers. Modern teaching aids, such as projectors, were introduced. Minor upgrades were made to school facilities for evening studies.
Additional support included sponsoring transportation for candidates to and from examination centres. Volunteers from the National Service scheme who assisted with the programme received stipends. This injection of resources aims to create a better learning environment. It seeks to directly impact student readiness for the critical BECE exams.
A key component of BECEPIP is its scholarship scheme. This is designed to motivate academic achievement. Top students will receive full scholarships for Senior High School (SHS). Those scoring between aggregates 6 and 15 will get the OMJ Full Scholarship. Students scoring 16 to 20 will receive the OMJ Admission Scholarship.
Further support is available for other high-achieving students. Those scoring between aggregates 21 and 25 will receive the OMJ Ketewa Biaa Nsua Scholarship. This award covers essential boarding items. These include mattresses, trunks, and chop boxes. The scholarship structure incentivizes students to strive for their best academic performance.
The programme benefited from volunteer efforts. Retired professionals offered their expertise. Teachers, educationists, doctors, and lawyers mentored students. This collaboration brought valuable real-world experience to the classroom. It provided students with guidance beyond academic subjects.
The project concluded on May 1, 2026. A ceremony was held at Nsakye M/A Basic School. It was attended by school officials, parents, and community leaders. Mr. Wisdom Kofi Nartey, the Foundation's Manager, delivered a message from the Founder and CEO, Mr. Osei Mensah Joseph.
Mr. Osei Mensah commended student dedication. He urged them to stay focused for the BECE exams starting May 4, 2026. He pledged continued support for committed learners. He also encouraged parents to invest in their children's education. He stated that education can reduce poverty in Akuapem South.
The OMJ Foundation's initiative highlights the importance of private sector involvement in education. It addresses a specific local challenge with a targeted approach. Such interventions can have a significant impact on future outcomes. They can help bridge educational gaps in communities.
