Onion supply to Ghana faces disruption with stranded trucks

Ghana's market faces a threat to its onion supply. Many trucks bringing onions from Niger are stuck in Nigeria. This is due to a disagreement between traders. This could lead to fewer onions in local markets.

The problem comes from an argument between some onion dealers. They had a dispute with Nigerian traders. This led to cars being stopped from unloading goods. Now, all trucks coming to Ghana are seized.

What began as a small fight has grown. It now includes many trader groups. These include traders from Ghana, Kusasi, Hausa, and Côte d’Ivoire. The situation has stopped many trucks. The onions on these trucks are perishable. They risk going bad if the hold-up lasts longer.

Drivers and traders are worried about losing money. They are also concerned about the impact on supply. One driver said they have been stuck for three days. Their goods are spoiling. They are asking the government for help. An Accra trader added that the dispute is also about how onion shipments are shared among trader groups.
