Oracle Job Cuts Follow AI Investments

Tech company Oracle has made significant job cuts. Reports from employees online suggest that about 10,000 people have lost their jobs. This reduction in staff is happening while Oracle spends heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Oracle has not commented on the job cuts. However, senior staff members online stated that the layoffs were not due to poor performance. Oracle executives have previously noted that AI tools help employees be more efficient. Mike Silicia, an Oracle co-chief executive, said earlier this month that AI coding tools help engineering teams deliver solutions faster. He also mentioned AI was used to create the company's new website.

These job losses are part of a trend seen in the tech industry. Other tech leaders like Mark Zuckerberg of Meta and Jack Dorsey of Block have also overseen layoffs, sometimes citing AI's role in increasing productivity. Past rounds of tech layoffs were not directly linked to AI.

Oracle is putting about GHS 50 billion into AI infrastructure this year. It also raised GHS 50 billion in debt to meet demand for even more AI infrastructure. Oracle is part of the Stargate initiative, a GHS 500 billion project to build data centers in the US. These centers are needed for future AI processing demands.
