Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has publicly urged the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to accelerate the completion of the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal. The Asantehene stated that finishing the project quickly will prevent the waste of significant public funds. He made these remarks during a meeting with a GPHA delegation at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

This call to action comes amid concerns that continued delays could severely undermine investor trust in Ghana's infrastructure development capabilities. The project, often called the Boankra Inland Port, is vital for improving trade efficiency and job creation in the Ashanti Region. Its neglect could squander substantial public resources already invested.

The Boankra project’s completion is crucial for Ghana's broader economic strategy, especially for the northern regions and landlocked neighbouring countries. This initiative aims to reduce pressure on the Tema Harbour by providing an alternative transport hub. It aligns with the government's efforts to enhance logistics and reduce transport costs for businesses. Previous governments have also highlighted its importance as a catalyst for local and foreign direct investment.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised his dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work. He stated that serious investors only commit capital when they see visible progress and steady construction. The King noted that without consistent funding and tangible improvement, attracting new partners for fresh capital injection would be difficult. He highlighted the port's role as an engine for youth employment beyond its logistical advantages.

In response, GPHA Board Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah assured the Asantehene that the GPHA Board is actively addressing the issues. Mr. Nketiah acknowledged recent improvements in construction activity. He outlined a strategic shift to prioritise core terminal facilities, ensuring the port becomes operational as soon as possible. This approach means the railway component, requiring substantial funding, will be pursued separately to avoid further delays to the main project.

The Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal is designed to serve as a critical 'dry port' near Kumasi. It will facilitate efficient goods transport and distribution to northern Ghana and neighboring landlocked countries. This strategic infrastructure is expected to reduce overall transport and logistics costs for businesses operating outside coastal regions. Justmoh Construction Limited, the contractor, has pledged to sustain momentum with government backing, aiming to make the project a pillar of West African trade.
