Regional Airports Rely on Accra for Funding, Says GACL Chairman

Ghana's regional airports are not profitable and depend on subsidies from Accra International Airport. The Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) stated that new airport charges, including a GHS 100 increase for domestic flights, are essential to maintain these regional hubs. This funding is also linked to national security, especially for deploying troops to northern border areas.

Regional Airports Rely on Accra for Funding, Says GACL Chairman

Ghana's regional airports are losing money. They rely on funds from Accra International Airport.

James Agalga, the GACL Chairman, said this. He spoke about new airport fees. Domestic travelers now pay an extra GHS 100 for one-way tickets. International return passengers pay an extra $100.

Mr. Agalga said Accra Airport is the only airport making a profit. All other airports in Ghana lose money. Accra Airport must subsidize them.

He explained that these regional airports must stay open. This is part of a national plan to connect the country. He also noted a link to Ghana's security. He mentioned threats near the northern borders. Regional airports help move troops and special forces quickly.

The GACL says these new charges are needed. They will help maintain the aviation network. Without them, the country's borders could be at risk. Connectivity across Ghana would also suffer.

The GACL expects these new fees to provide stable income. This income will support operations and national security needs.
