Republic Bank commissions two water projects

Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC has completed and commissioned two mechanized borehole water projects. These projects now supply clean and safe drinking water to communities in Pwalugu and Dingoni. The Upper East and Northern Regions benefit from this significant development.

The bank's intervention was directly inspired by a JoyNews documentary . This film showed residents, including women and children, desperately seeking water alongside animals. Dr. Benjamin Dzoboku, Managing Director of Republic Bank, stated the bank felt compelled to act. Republic Bank supports four key areas through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. These include health, education, water and sanitation, and climate action.

These new water systems are crucial for Ghana's development goals. They directly address United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). This goal focuses on ensuring access to water and sanitation for all. Such infrastructure projects are vital for improving living standards nationwide. Previous government efforts have also focused on similar water access challenges across the country. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows ongoing disparities in water access between urban and rural areas.

The Pwalugu project was inaugurated on May 25. The Dingoni project followed on May 26. These projects are part of Republic Bank's "Power to Make A Difference" (PMAD) initiative. "This project is not just about water; it is a symbol of hope, dignity, improved public health, and enhanced livelihoods for the people of Pwalugu," said the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga. The Chief of Pwalugu, Naba Ayine Akpiisi Kurugu, praised Republic Bank's perseverance. He noted previous contractors failed to find water at shallower depths. The Bank drilled over 110 meters to secure the water source.

In Dingoni, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Seidu Breimeh, highlighted the relief provided. "Water remains a major challenge in this district, and this project brings great relief to the people of Dingoni," he stated. The bank plans to train community members on maintaining the solar and electricity-powered systems. This ensures long-term sustainability.
