Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has voiced his disappointment regarding the renewed debate about Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He stated that the nation has already arrived at a broad national consensus on the issue. Sheikh Shaibu’s comments emerged after President John Mahama's recent remarks. Mahama indicated the bill would undergo constitutional procedures if presented to him. This also comes after Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin suggested a review of the bill.

Sheikh Shaibu believes Ghana’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights was settled long ago. This settlement involved political, religious, and parliamentary discussions. He stated on JoyNews’ PM Express that there is no doubt about the nation's agreement on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. Both major political parties have declared their positions. Religious groups and parliamentary bodies have also stated their stances.

Extensive prior debates should have ended further controversy. Sheikh Shaibu finds it disheartening to revisit this subject. He believes a definite national position was already taken. The previous Parliament had passed the bill. Only presidential assent remained. Certain legal processes prevented it from reaching the president. The former president did not sign it.

He expected the current administration to act quickly. Sheikh Shaibu thought the process would be straightforward. He anticipated it would reach the current president’s desk. This would allow for the presidential promise of signing to be fulfilled.

The Islamic scholar questioned the emerging political divisions. He cautioned against turning the issue into a partisan contest. Sheikh Shaibu finds it regrettable that the issue is causing disagreement. He hopes politicians will not politicize this matter.

Sheikh Shaibu believes the debate goes beyond party politics. From his perspective, it is not a political matter. He has maintained this view consistently. Opposition to LGBTQ+ practices is rooted in Ghanaian values. These values include religious, cultural, and family beliefs. He stated that LGBTQ+ issues challenge the family unit. The family is the fundamental unit of society.

Ghana’s traditions and religious beliefs have forged unity. This unity exists on the matter of LGBTQ+ rights. He urged political figures not to weaken this consensus. Turning it into a political debate between parties is disappointing.
