Tamale High Court has sentenced four men to eight years in prison each. They were convicted for a kidnapping that involved demands for GHS90,000 in ransom. The court also ordered the auction of their assets.

The four individuals are Haruna Seidu, Osman Sambo, Amadu Aminu, and Hoyeefe Amadu. They abducted a man in Wapuli. His family was threatened to pay a ransom. Police arrested the suspects while they were sharing the money. They were found near Bokpaba on the Yendi–Bimbilla road. The court found them guilty of conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping, causing harm, and threat of death. Their sentences will run at the same time, known as concurrently.

This case occurs as Ghana faces persistent security challenges in various regions. Kidnapping and related crimes impact public safety and can deter investment. The Northern Region has seen a rise in such incidents, prompting increased police action. In 2023, Ghana's crime statistics showed a concerning rise in violent crimes. The use of ransom as a tactic highlights the financial motive behind these serious offenses. The court's decision reinforces the government's stance against such criminal activities.

Northern Regional Police Commander DCOP Wisdom Lavoe confirmed the convictions. He stated that the suspects were prosecuted by the Tamale High Court Two. "The court found the four guilty of conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping, causing harm and threat of death," he said. "Each was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment with hard labour, to run concurrently." Funds from the auctioned motorbikes and phones will be paid into the Consolidated Fund. A portion of the recovered ransom, GHS70,010, will be returned to the complainant’s brother, Buubu Osman.

The sentencing is a stern warning to criminals involved in violent acts. It signals that the judicial system is prepared to hold perpetrators accountable. This conviction could encourage more citizens to report suspicious activities. It also shows the effectiveness of police intelligence units in tracking down criminals. The public is urged to report any information through emergency numbers 191 or 18555. The police are continuing investigations into other kidnapping cases in the region.
