Telecel Ghana trains 97 hearing impaired entrepreneurs in digital finance
Telecel Ghana recently trained 97 hearing impaired entrepreneurs in digital finance and business management. This initiative, part of Telecel's commitment to digital inclusion, helps Deaf traders and artisans integrate into Ghana's digital economy by using mobile financial platforms for transactions. The program also highlights the need for wider sign language access.
Telecel Ghana has provided financial literacy and mobile commerce training to 97 Deaf and hard-of-hearing entrepreneurs. The workshop focused on business education and onboarding participants onto Telecel Cash, its mobile financial platform.
This initiative helps participants accept digital payments and manage transactions more efficiently. It promotes economic participation for underserved communities in Ghana.
The training also emphasized sustainable business management principles and financial technology education. Participants received free merchant SIMs and assistance in setting up business accounts.
The program is part of Telecel's broader efforts for inclusion. Since 2016, Telecel SuperCare has offered specialized support for the Deaf community. This includes affordable data packages and accessible communication channels. Deaf customers can dial *494# for customer service via video and WhatsApp calls with sign language professionals.
Studies show over 211,000 people in Ghana are Deaf or hard of hearing. Over 470,000 have varying degrees of hearing loss. These initiatives aim to integrate accessibility into Telecel's business strategy.
Telecel has also advocated for wider sign language access in public institutions. It calls for mainstreaming sign language studies in schools. This would improve access to healthcare, education, and employment for Deaf people.
