Three Remanded Over GHS 3.8 Million in Jewellery Heists
A Ghanaian court has remanded three individuals in custody following their alleged involvement in a series of jewellery shop robberies. The accused face charges stemming from incidents in 2025 that resulted in the theft of gold items valued at over GHS 3.8 million.
An Accra Circuit Court has ordered the remand of three individuals. They are accused of robbing jewellery shops in Accra. The total value of stolen gold items exceeds GHS 3.8 million. The accused are Musa Abdul Aziz Mamoud, a stock trader. Abubakar Mamoud, a car dealer, is also implicated. Edgar Donkor, a fashion designer, faces charges as well.
These men are alleged to have committed multiple robberies in 2025. One incident involved a jewellery shop at Westlands. Thieves stole gold accessories worth GHS 2 million. Another raid targeted Rhyme Jewellery shop at Airport Residential Area. This occurred on September 11, 2025. Items valued at GHS 1,813,000 were taken during that robbery. The prosecution states these were premeditated and coordinated attacks. Musa Abdul Aziz Mamoud allegedly threatened a salesgirl with a pistol during one robbery. They reportedly used motorbikes to flee the scene.
These events highlight ongoing security concerns in Accra's commercial areas. The value of the stolen items, over GHS 3.8 million, represents a significant loss. This amount is roughly equivalent to the annual revenue of a small to medium-sized Ghanaian enterprise. The series of robberies may deter investment in retail sectors. It also puts pressure on law enforcement to ensure public safety. Prior to this, Ghana has seen cases of organized crime impacting businesses. The precise impact on market confidence remains to be seen. However, such incidents can affect consumer spending due to safety fears.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Haligah is leading the prosecution. He told the court that the accused denied the charges. They pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. Musa Abdul Aziz Mamoud faces an additional charge. He is accused of causing unlawful damage. The court also issued a bench warrant for Zane Acquaye. He is a goldsmith accused of receiving stolen gold. The value of those items was GHS 11,400. Acquaye failed to appear in court. ASP Haligah stated Acquaye was properly notified.
The defense counsel requested bail for the accused. The court refused this request. They were remanded into lawful custody. The prosecution argued that granting bail would endanger public safety. They stated the accused posed a threat. Investigations led to their arrest on March 26, 2026. Police intelligence operations were crucial. Searches at their residences yielded significant evidence. This included masks, tools, a toy gun, and weighing scales. Jewellery boxes and motorbikes were also recovered. Some stolen jewellery was sold to Zane Acquaye, according to investigations. The accused are expected to appear in court again on May 20, 2026.
