Minister Appeals for Urgent Repair of Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway
Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga has urged the government to prioritize the immediate rehabilitation of the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway. The 163-kilometer road has deteriorated significantly, causing longer travel times, increased accidents, and challenges for emergency medical transport, according to the minister.

The 163-kilometer stretch has become extremely rough. Potholes have widened into deep gullies. A journey that once took two and a half hours now takes nearly four hours. Normal vehicles struggle to navigate the damaged surface. The poor condition of the road has resulted in numerous accidents. These incidents have led to injuries and fatalities. Many vehicles have also suffered damage.
This highway is a vital transport link. It connects the Northern Region to the Upper East Region. Ghana faces ongoing infrastructure challenges. Many roads across the country require urgent maintenance. This situation affects trade and movement of goods. The deterioration of this highway hinders economic activity. Mr. Atanga stressed the highway's critical role in healthcare. Critically ill patients are transported to Tamale Teaching Hospital. The rough road conditions endanger these vulnerable patients. Delays during transit can worsen their health outcomes. The Minister stated his intention to meet the sector minister. He will present the concerns of the Upper East Region. "The government is a doer," he assured. He also mentioned ongoing efforts for the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom road project.
